From the very first game in new EURO qualifiers edition, Belarus made a huge setback with a 1:1 draw away from home against Luxembourg. They actually went well into the game, had few great chances, but stood behind in the scoreline in 42nd minute via counter attack of their opponents. In the second half, visiting side upped their performance and pushed for an equalizer, finally reaching it in 78th minute, but without threatening more in the last minutes of the game. Looking at that result and their performance, there is little hope that Belarus will be able to finish as top three nations in the group. In order to regain their chances, the team will have to make wonders in next three matches, at home against Ukraine, away to Slovakia and against Spain, which is rather difficult. With such a schedule, their chances seems to be quite weak and probably finished even before playing half of the matches. Defender Aleh Veratsila (14 caps, Dinamo Minsk) and midfielders Alexander Hleb (66 caps, 6 goals, Konyaspor) and Yan Tsiharow. They were down 0:1 already after first twenty minutes of the game, as the team tried to reply, improving the tempo of the game but without making proper chances. As the time progressed, they were with less and less clear mind how to get through to the goalscoring chances and the visitors had no tough time walking away with the three pointer. Towards this game they have no space for new losses and the victory is their only goal, as they later on hosts FYR Macedonia and visit Luxembourg, aiming nine points in these three matches. Defenders Yevhen Makarenko (3 caps), Yevhen Selin (15 caps, 1 goal) and Vitaly Mandzyuk (24 caps, 1 goal) are all sidelined with injuries, same as midfielder .
