Another Bosnian national team match is on the horizon, but this one, along with Monday’s meeting with group favorites Belgium in Zenica, has big consequences towards the long term future of the team. Defeat and Safet Susic’s four-year reign as head coach could be coming to an end whilst delivering another blow to the Dragons’ Euro 2016 qualifying hopes in the process after the shock reverse to Cyprus last month. Victory and perhaps things will slowly get back on track after all the recent disappointments of a World Cup group stage exit and defeat to a lowly ranked European nation at home have set the team back from achieving their ultimate targets to date. The 2014 Fifa World Cup contenders will be aiming to atone their bad start to the Euro 2016 qualifiers following their shock 2-1 defeat against Cyprus. For Wales, however, a scintillating performance from Gareth Bale – who incidentally won the Welsh Player of The Year award for a record fourth time – saw Chris Coleman’s men overcome Andorra to kick-start their aspirations of qualifying for a first major tournament since 1958. But Coleman suffered a blow in Wales’ quest to finally get the better of Bosnia when James Collins and Paul Dummett withdrew from the squad due to hamstring and muscular injuries respectively. The visitors will be aiming to capitalise on Wales’ misfortune as they boast a better head-to-head record – and Bosnia and Herzegovina coach Safet Susic will no doubt be in defiant mood to continue their unbeaten record against the Welsh once more this Friday. The injury concerns aren’t just troubling Wales’ plans though. Bosnia’s defensive problems were very much exposed in the defeat to Cyprus last month and the issues on that front have only grown since with a Bundesliga-based triumvirate of Ermin Bicakcic, Emir Spahic, and Sead Kolasinac all being ruled out for the game alongside another player who plays his club football in Germany, Sejad Salihovic, as well as Goran Zakaric. The mini-injury crisis leaves Bosnia short of numbers at the back with just 5 natural defenders currently in the squad, one of them being a late addition in Zeljeznicar’s Josip Kvesic, and only one with more than 15 caps to his name. The lack of experience and cohesion at the back could be exactly the biggest problem Bosnia will face in Cardiff, with Bale licking his lips at the prospect of taking on such an untested backline missing their inspirational leader and defensive stalwart in Emir Spahic, who recently came out of retirement in an attempt to help solve Bosnia’s struggles at the back.
